The correct Pharmacy Symbol

correct20pharmacy20symbol

The Caduceus, the Rod of Asclepius, and the Bowl of Hygieia are three symbols that belong to Greek mythology. Over the millennia their meaning has often been confused and interchanged until they overlap. The caduceus is depicted with 2 snakes intertwined along with a stick and with 2 wings at the top end. It is the symbol of Hermes and therefore should represent the symbol of trade. Over time, however, various medical societies and organizations have misused the caduceus as a symbol of medicine. The real symbol of medicine is actually the staff of Asclepius, represented by a single snake tangled along with a stick and without wings. Finally, the symbol of the Pharmacy: the Bowl Of Hygieia was used for the first time by the Parisian pharmacy society in 1796 in a coin. The symbol has since been used worldwide by various pharmacy societies and organizations.
